Adjacent Towns and Villages Arundel Our nearest town is Arundel. Overlooked by its castle and cathedral, this picturesque and historic town is rich in history. See http://www.arundel.tv/ for further information. Eartham In Eartham, cottages cluster around the great house (now a school), the village pub and the church. In the 19th century it was a centre of literature and art. The poet William Hayley invited celebrities of the time to Eartham House, including Cowper, Flaxman, Blake, Romney, Hurdis and Charlotte Smith. A more bizarre claim to fame is commemorated in the church: The first recorded death by locomotive. Statesman and Eartham resident William Huskisson looked the wrong way and was killed at the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. Madehurst Madehurst is a hamlet of largely nineteenth century estate cottages set in beautiful countryside of woods and fields. The ancient church contains one of the oldest bells still being regularly rung – it was installed on the 100th anniversary of the Doomsday Book.
