Post Office

Slindon Post Office closed in January 2008 as part of the nationwide Post Office programme of closures (despite our best efforts to keep it).

Stamps can be bought at the Pottery

As a way of helping to fill some of the gap left by the closure of the Post Office, books of Second and First Class stamps are now on sale at Slindon Pottery. The Pottery is open 10.30-12.00 & 2.00-4.00 EVERY DAY except Tuesdays (including weekends). It also has a good range of original greetings cards. With special thanks to Janet Upton for agreeing to do this.

Extra ‘Post Office runs’ by the village bus to Amberley Post Office

Bonny Beere has organised a thrice-weekly Post Office Special trip for the village bus to take people from Slindon (and Madehurst) to the Post Office and stores in Amberley. The trip is at different times on Monday and Wednesday & Thursday but on each day it will give you about 20 minutes in Amberley Stores and Post Office and means you can be back home within the hour. Amberley as been chosen because it fits in with the existing bus schedule but also because the very good village store (set up the community) deserves our support.
Mondays :
Pick up at key points in Slindon (and Madehurst) at about 12.15 – return by about 1.00
Wednesday & Thursday : Pick up at key points in Slindon (and Madehurst) at about 9.00 - return by about 10.00

Please ring Bonny Beere to book a place and agree pick-up points. 814 446
If you are over 60 and have a bus pass (which is free) there is NO FARE. Otherwise the return fare is £2.60. If you have any neighbours who will find the absence of postal services a problem, then please make sure they know about this service.

Other Post Offices nearby

If you have a car the nearest Post Offices are Eastergate and Walberton, but don’t forget that Boxgrove Stores also has a Post Office and is an excellent independent village shop that deserves our support. (Or why not reduce your carbon footprint and have a chat to some neighbours en route, and use the bus in any case?)

The Pottery (Top Road)

The Slindon pottery was established in the mid-1970’s when the building was converted from a builder’s workshop. The building was originally the estate wheelwright and carpenter’s shop.

Pottery is hand made by Janet Upton, mostly wheel thrown, in stoneware and earthenware. Items can be made to order and a selection of crafts, cards and prints are also on sale. The pottery is usually open daily from 10.30 – 12.00 and 2.00 – 4.00 (closed Tuesdays). Demonstrations can be arranged by prior arrangement. 01243 814534

Following the closure of the Post Office, the Pottery also sells books of 1st and 2nd class stamps.

The Slindon Pumpkins (Top Road)

The late Ralph Upton grew pumpkins in Slindon for over 40 years and his autumn display attracts visitors from around the world. From September to November (peaking around Halloween) the barns adjoining his former home in Top Road Slindon are festooned with a display created from the 50-plus varieties of pumpkin and over 30 varieties of squash. The range of sizes, colours and shapes is extraordinary and each year he tried a new variety. Ralph and his wife Barbara also wrote a book of recipes to accompany the crop, and their own favourite is a thick creamy soup made from the beautiful blue-grey Crown Prince squash.

Following Ralph Upton's sad demise, aged 87, in June 2009, his son Robin and Ralph's loyal team have kept his tradition alive and preserve Slindon's reputation as Britain's pumpkin capital.

Slindon Bakery (Top Road)

There has been a bakery on this site since 1740. Although restored to working order by Andrew Turner-Cross, actual baking now takes place locally, but outside of the village. Meet Andrew at the monthly Farmer's Market. (01243 814369)

We will be happy to mention additional businesses operating from Slindon upon request.
