The Newburgh Arms

Posted 24-03-10

As many of you will know the Newburgh Arms was sold at auction last month and you may have noticed that work started there on Monday 22 March.

Lots of people are interested to know whats happening and chats with the builders have given us some basic information

The builders working on it are from Emsworth - they successfully bid for it at the auction and they are the current owners (not contractors working for a developer). They tell us the Planning Permission to convert to 2 flats is still valid, as the work on the conversation had already been started before the Consent lapsed (albeit the work stopped almost as soon as it started!). This is despite the rumours and despite the details on the auctioneers sheet which said it had lapsed. They seem to have checked this carefully with Arun and in addition they are only doing preliminary works at the moment - clearing out and tidying up and basic works that fit within the current Consent.

They hope to convert the building to a single house, not two flats but will need new Planning Consent for this - they have spoken the Senior Planner at Arun and their architect is working on new plans which will be submitted to Arun as soon as possible. IF those Plans are done in time, they will be happy to them to show them to us at the Parish Meeting next Tuesday.

School Report

Slindon Church of England Primary School
A Review of the Past Year

2009 proved to be another busy year for the school. Each week was packed with activities and new learning opportunities for the children. Besides the regular timetabled curriculum lessons, the children took part in a variety of school trips, sports festivals and school exchange visits. The year saw the launch of our new website (www.slindonprimaryschool.co.uk) and the development of our Virtual Learning Environment (http://learning.slindon.w-sussex.sch.uk). More

Postage Stamps Now Available at Slindon Pottery

As a way of helping to fill some of the gap left by the closure of the Post Office, books of Second and First Class stamps are now on sale at Slindon Pottery. If there is sufficient demand we may extend the range of stamps available.

The Pottery is open 10.30-12.00 & 2.00-4.00 EVERY DAY except Tuesdays
(including weekends). It also has a good range of original greetings cards.

With special thanks to Janet Upton for agreeing to do this, and thanks also to Pam Haycock for suggesting it, and to SlindonLife for organising the account with Royal Mail and sorting out the stock of stamps

Post Office

Bonny Beere has organised a thrice-weekly Post Office Special trip for the village bus to take people from Slindon (and Madehurst) to the Post Office and stores in Amberley. The trip is at different times on Monday and Wednesday & Thursday but on each day it will give you about 20 minutes in Amberley Stores and Post Office and means you can be back home within the hour. Amberley as been chosen because it fits in with the existing bus schedule but also because the very good village store (set up the community) deserves our support.

Mondays :
Pick up at key points in Slindon (and Madehurst) at about 12.15 – return by about 1.00

Wednesday & Thursday : Pick up at key points in Slindon (and Madehurst) at about 9.00 - return by about 10.00

Please ring Bonny Beere to book a place and agree pick-up points. 814 446
If you are over 60 and have a bus pass (which is free) there is NO FARE. Otherwise the return fare is £2.60.
If you have any neighbours who will find the Slindon Post Office closure a problem, then please make sure they know about this new service.

If you have a car the nearest Post Offices are Eastergate and Walberton, but don’t forget that Boxgrove Stores also has a Post Office and is an excellent independent village shop that deserves our support. (Or why not reduce your carbon footprint and have a chat to some neighbours en route, and use the bus in any case?)
